時序進入2016年，以全球汽車產業來看除3月瑞士日內瓦車展外，北美地區頗具規模的展覽還有4月美國紐約車展。其中最令人矚目的即和車展同時公布的「World Car of the Year」獎項，因為這將成為2016年美國汽車銷售的新指標。現在，經過評審員在2015年底初步評估後，2016年1月底也正式公布各級距的入圍名單。

World Car Awards（WCA）並非屬於任何一個車展協會或營利組織，彙集亞洲、歐洲以及美國等傑出記者群所組成的評審委員會，用各地不同的用車知識與在地經驗，評選出當年的World Car of the Year（世界年度風雲車）。2016年WCA也相同列出World Car of the Year、World Luxury Car、World Performance Car、World Car Design of the Year、World Green Car等五個級距。

2016年1月26日World Car Awards先行公布入圍名單，以及其它四個級距（World Luxury Car、World Performance Car、World Car Design of the Year、World Green Car）前五名單後，第二輪投票也隨即開始，並將在3月份的日內瓦車展公布前三名，最後4月份的紐約車展才會宣布所有級距的獲獎者。
